10 Reasons Why You Should Become a Feminist

1. Wage gap is a problem and us women should fight to become equal.

2. Sexualization of women is an ongoing issue in our society. We should not be told how we should look and we should never have to live up to any standard of what a woman should or should not present them physically.

3. Women should be the only ones who have an opinion on the way that they choose to present themselves.

4. Catcalling is a way that men attempt to pick up women.  Women should not be expected to find rude behavior flattering, but this has become a norm in society.

5. Women are still viewed as inferior to men in the workplace.  To this day a woman only makes 77 cents to a man’s dollar.

6. Women are often asked not to dress a certain way because their clothes might be a distraction to men.  It should not be a woman’s responsibility to be sure that what they want to wear is not something that might make a man unable to focus on what he is doing.

7. Men are not expected to change their names when they get married.  Women are expected the change the name that they have had their whole life because they chose to spend their life with a significant other.

8. Even as children little girls are taught that if a boy is mean to them they must have a crush on them.  As young girls we are taught that it is ok to be mocked by boys.

9. Sexually active women who are not in committed relationships are often labeled as “thots”, “sluts”, and other negative terms.

10.Throughout our lives we are taught to treat everyone equally but our society overlooks gender equality as being part of the equality that we preach.

  1. (More than) 10 Reasons Why I Did Not Like Your Blog Post

    0. A vine with the caption "I hope you like feminist rants because that's my kind of thing" is going to poison the well for anyone who might not already be a feminist.

    1. Saying, "us women should fight" further alienates not only people who do not self-identify as women, but also people who appreciate good grammar.

2a. Stating something "is an ongoing issue in our society" without providing supporting evidence is not good argumentation.

2b. Never use the word "never". Or "always."

2c. Regardless of your opinion, there are reasons for dress codes and there are times and places for the existence of standards that both men and women must abide by. A hospital operating room comes to mind. Or a construction site.

    3. An assertion that excludes an entire gender from decision making about an issue is sorta what you're railing against...

4a. Let me fix this for you... "Catcalling is a way that men pick up women". It works often enough that it is a viable mating strategy. You can rail about rude behavior should not be flattering, but some women are going to do it any way.

    5. This is a repeat of #1. Further, the "77 cents to a man's dollar" is not related to "equal work for equal pay", but instead is an overall summary of the entire pool of wage-earning women vs wage-earning men. It is tied in with factors such as:
    * women taking more time off from a career to raise children than men
    * women working in less lucrative fields
    * women working fewer hours then men

    6. This is a repeat of #2. You are also attempting to overcome basic biology. Do you want your bus driven or airplane flown by a man who is distracted because there is a woman showing a lot of skin next to them?

    7. This is an issue that Feminism has won. It is socially acceptable for a woman to not change their name on marriage. (My wife did not, for example.)

    8. I have no idea what little girls are being taught nowadays, but I did not raise mine to tolerate boys being mean to them, or being mocked by them.

    9. The majority of namecalling against sexually active women comes from (surprise!) other women -- not men. Which makes sense, if you think about it from the guys' point of view. The more women who are sexually active, the better chance he has of getting lucky. (And thanks for informing me of the new shame-word "thot", which looks to mean "that hoe out there.")

    10. I disagree with your contention that "our society" overlooks gender equality. And I shall now provide as much supporting evidence to bolster my position as you did.

    11. No matter how many power moves elegantly dressed and made up girls make in front of exploding cars, GIRLS do not run the world.

  2. I really like the idea of this post but I think that if you added more information to why these reasons are a good reasons to become a feminist. I think that these are all good reasons, but that they should be backed up with reasons as to why they are good. Other than that I liked they concept of the set up and goal of this post.
